RETRO MUSIC LIST FOR THE C64 & AMIGA - PART 1 - INFORMATION (TXT)

I have cut my lists up into nine different parts:

1) Information / "About"
2) SID Tunes for C64 Games, Demos, Compos, Crack Intros etcetera
3) Amiga Game Soundtracks 1 of 2
4) Amiga Game Soundtracks 2 of 2
5) Amiga Music for Demos, Compos, Crack Intros etcetera 1 of 2
6) Amiga Music for Demos, Compos, Crack Intros etcetera 2 of 2
7) Popular SID Tunes for the C64
8) Update List
9) Miscellanea

"Popular SID Tunes for the C64" contains the songs that most people know. However, that part overlaps to some extent with "SID Tunes for C64 Games, Demos, Compos, Crack Intros etcetera" where some tunes can be considered popular as well.

This is a list of potential C64 and Amiga remix suggestions that I was working on a few years ago (in 2009 if my memory serves me right). Unfortunately, my hard disk drive failed one day, causing a large chunk of my data to become corrupted. I was, however, able to recover some files, but since this list seemed so incomplete after the recovery, I fear that it was among the files that got damaged. I simply have the feeling I had more suggestions at the end of the list, but I can't remember everything; it was so long time ago.

If you think that you can contribute to the lists, please let me know about your suggestions or additions so that the lists can be updated! Don't hesitate to tell me about your suggestions even though you'd have a slightly low opinion about them. If I find the suggestions good enough, I'll be glad to add them to the list.

Below there are some facts about this list. Please feel free to skip them if you don't have time to read everything.

*These lists contain my own remix suggestions. In case you happen to like some of them, and you have some free time on your hands, feel free to remix them.

*The lists are very information-laden, nearly exhaustive. Actually, they are almost embarrassingly long to be honest... and holy hot damn was it a pain to compile all these songs at times.

*In the future, there will be a short update note at the beginning of this list. It'll indicate how the list has been updated since it was "published".

*I have tried to justify some of my selections by writing some comments (at the end of most suggestions).

*Please take into account that I don't have any musical experience, so my way of justifying the selection of some of the songs that you're about to see here might come off as somewhat silly at times (at least if you have some musical background). :)

*Some "self-evident" remix suggestions have been ignored if their existence is as clear as daylight to most sceners.

*Some links may have become defunct, but I'll update them when I have enough time. You can also help me with all the invalid links. NB! Many links taking you to Stone Oakvalley's site seem to be invalid probably due to a server change (oslt). The defunct links have also to do with the following announcement concerning some changes in filenaming and directory structure: http://www.dirtcellar.net/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=453

*Please be advised that there might be some bugs in the search engine or database of both SOASC and SOAMC, which is why I was simply not able to find SOASC and SOAMC links to each song. The links will be added to this list when the possible bugs are fixed and when time allows.

*I copy/pasted numerous links to each song as a matter of precaution. As we know, links tend to become defunct over time.

*"Some really great tunes are missing but you've still put here some really crappy ones!"
-Some tunes may have been done with skill but if I have, while listening to them, been of the opinion that they lack a good melody or some other important attributes, I have simply ditched them. While choosing songs, I have laid a lot of emphasis on melody.

*I bet a few songs might sound like they're absolute garbage, but please read the comments, and take into account that if remixed, the songs are bound to sound different, and it's mostly the melody that counts in the original songs.

*Some tunes, e.g. all the Ocean Loaders, are here for the reason that they have turned out to be exceptionally difficult to remix.

*Please do not hesitate to point out any errors, inaccuracies or omissions (everything ranging from typos to defunct links) that you might notice. Please note that there might even be some music files made on a PC, e.g. XM files ("extended modules"), S3M files (ScreamTracker version 3), IT files (Impulse Tracker) or even modules made with PC trackers that have accidentally been included in this list. They should absolutely not be on the list unless otherwise stated, so please kindly inform me about them if you spot any.

*Most of these suggestions have been taken from many different corners of the Internet, including various YouTube videos on C64 and Amiga music compilations and different top hits lists.

*If you decide to remix some of the songs here, an 80's or early 90's style approach might work in most cases because most of the songs were made back in the 80's and early 90's...

*It would be very difficult and time-consuming to make a perfect, all-inclusive list but this list is at least an attempt to cover most of the songs that I approve of (and boy, oh boy, is it a huge number of songs)...

*I knew many of the tunes on these lists before I even started compiling all the songs. However, I remember going through several different "Best of" and "Greatest Hits" collections in order to find C64 and Amiga songs that are worth remixing. I also skimmed through several discussions concerning the "best" music for the Amiga and C64. Another way that I used in order to find good SID tunes and Amiga modules (to "sift the wheat from the chaff") without having to go through tens of thousands of songs was by listening to the tunes that had already been remixed. As we know, the fact that someone has decided to remix a particular song can be a sign of the fact that the author happened to like the tune...

*All the specific subtune numbers have been taken with the help of Sidplay2/w win32 version (Feb 22 2009) for SID files, and both DeliPlayer 2.5 and XMPlay 3.4.0.0, 3.4.2.1 & 3.6.0.1 equipped with the Delix & XMP-Zip plugins for various Amiga music files. If you do not own a C64 or an Amiga, those might be one of the best players available.

*As for some Amiga audio files, at least DeliPlayer and XMPlay seem to show a different number of subsongs... This is an extremely annoying problem, and I don't know what it is due to. In some cases I have written some notes about this irritating problem so that you know which subtune I am referring to in each case.

*I have noticed that for some reason, two Amiga music files with different filesizes can be totally identical in their substantial content: the song is similar as are the tags, sample list boxes, and other attributes. These similar files can be especially seen in the section "Amiga Music for Demos, Compos, Crack Intros etcetera".
